: Ethics approvals were granted by the Samoa Ministry of Health, The University of Queensland Human Research Ethics Committee (protocol 2021/HE000895), and the Australian National University Human Research Ethics Committee (protocol 2018/341). The study was conducted in collaboration with the Samoa Ministry of Health, WHO Samoa Country Office and the Samoa Red Cross. Village leaders were contacted to seek permission for village involvement and to inform community members about the study prior to survey commencement. Consent was also sought from members of selected houses, with verbal and written explanations provided by members of the field team. This included consent to enter the participant’s household and written informed consent prior to enrolment in the study (provided by a parent or guardian for child participants). Fieldwork activities were conducted by bilingual local field teams, and written information, consent forms and questionnaires were provided in Samoan or English according to each participant’s preference.
