Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The Indian sub-study received appropriate ethics approvals from the Institutional Ethics Committee of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF/NCT/09-06/2013). The Danish sub-study was approved by the Ethical Committees of the Capital Region of Denmark (H-3-2013- 102) and the Danish Data Protection Agency (2013-54-0498). Both studies were conducted in accordance with the Helsinki declaration. Informed consent was obtained from all volunteers prior to inclusion in the Indian as well as Danish sub-studies. The Danish study application and the Indian study application to the respective national Ethical Committees detailed the full integrated Danish and Indian microbiome studies. Thus, these studies were approved as a whole by both Ethics Committees.
