: Animal experiments were approved by the Ethical Committee for Animal Experimentation of the LUMC, Leiden. The human serum of RA patients was collected during the IMPROVED study, which was approved by LUMC and all participating hospitals. Informed consent was obtained from all participants. The serum of individuals at risk of RA was collected as a part of the Nagasaki Island Study performed in Japan where it was approved by a regional ethic committee.
