: Samples used in this study belonged to travelers or immigrants coming from endemic malaria areas that attended different Spanish hospitals with malaria or other tropical diseases suspicion. They were sent to the Spanish Malaria Reference Center within a project for the detection of submicroscopic malaria cases approved by the Medical and Health Research Ethics Committee (CEIC) of the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre (No. CEtm: 18/021). <i>Plasmodium knowlesi</i> samples were collected in Malaysia under a project approved by the Medical Research Sub-Committee of the Malaysian Ministry of Health (NMRR-13–1064-18189).
