: Fish samples were caught and collected under the permission 159/2024 of the state fisheries agency ‘Struktur- und Genehmigungsdirektion Nord (SGD Nord)’ Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. This study did not include experiments on living organisms, therefore, no further permissions from federal animal welfare agencies or ethics commissions were required. Prior to the permission by the ‘SGD Nord’, in order to fulfil federal German law §4 paragraph 1&2 TierSchlV (Tierschutz-Schlachtverordnung) and Rhineland-Palatinate state law in §33 and §36 paragraph 1 LFischG RP, authors NS and MS did demonstrate knowledge of the species of fish, the care and maintenance of fishing waters, fishing gear and its use, the handling of caught fish and the fishing and animal welfare regulations by obtaining a fishing license after passing a fishing examination.
