: This study complies with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki; all participants signed informed consent; national ethics committees approved EPIC Italy and TILDA studies as reported elsewhere []. The Understanding Society study has been approved by the University of Essex ethics committee. Approval from the National Research Ethics Service was obtained for the collection of biosocial data by trained nurses in wave 2 and of the main Understanding Society survey. The HRS study protocol was approved by the University of Michigan Institutional Review Board.
