Ethics approval and consent to participate: All extant specimens were collected under ethical guidelines for research study approved by local ethics committees for animal care and use: the following ref. numbers MZE-39726/2025–13143 and MZE-39723/2025–13143 were approved for the specimen of Protopterus annectens and the approval for treating Neoceratodus forsteri larvae was given by Animal Ethics Committee (AEC CA 2022/04/1599) of the Queensland Government. All the other specimens were collected in museums. The scanning experiment was performed on dead animals in accordance with guiding principles for the care of laboratory/collection animals.
