Case studies do not meet the Common Rule definition of research because it is not a systematic investigation designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge. As case reports, by definition, have a very limited sample size, they are not designed to be predictive of similar circumstances and hence do not meet the generalizable requirement of this definition and therefore are not subject to IRB review.”
