: All trials reported herein were performed in the Animal Care Unit (biocontainment level 2 facilities) at the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. The design and experimental procedures were in compliance with the Canadian Council for Animal Care and approved by the Animal Research Ethics Board (Protocol #20180046). The ARRIVE 2.0 guidelines [] were adhered to and are reported in Additional file . Animal care staff and researchers observed every animal twice daily and monitored clinical status according to Humane Intervention Points (HIP) (Additional file ). Trial length was established at a fixed time after the recovery of most pigs, except when their wellbeing was compromised. The latter included unresponsiveness, rectal temperature above 41.5 °C or below 35 °C, extreme hyperemia, or bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes, tachypnea and dyspnea, or persistent MMHD with moderate emaciation. Euthanasia was by cranial captive bolt followed by exsanguination.
