: Ethical approval of the study protocol was obtained from the Makerere University School of Medicine Higher Degrees Research Ethics Committee (SOMREC # REC REF 2018-095), The Uganda National Council for science and Technology (UNCST # SS5103), and Regional Committee for Medical Research Ethics (REC) West #107632 and REC South East #50146. Permission to conduct the study was obtained from the authors of the CRAFFT tool, the Mbale district administration, and the head teachers of the respective schools. Informed consent from parents and assent from the child participants were also obtained. No participant identifiers were used, as all participants and schools were allocated study numbers. Privacy and confidentiality were ensured throughout the data collection process. To ensure the security of their children, parents brought their children from home to their respective schools and went back with them after the interviews. Parents of children identified through the study as having alcohol use problems were offered counseling and psychoeducation and referred for further management at Mbale regional referral hospital.
