Ethics approval and consent to participate
: This study was approved by the Higher Degrees Research and Ethics Committee of the School of Biomedical Sciences, Makerere University (Approval Numbers SBS194, REC REF 2011–183 & Ref HS 1080). The parent studies obtained assent from parents/guardians on behalf of the children to participate in the study, as well as consent for sample storage and future use of stored samples in further studies. However, participants’ data was excluded from the analyses.
