: This study was undertaken in compliance with the Research Ethics Guidelines of JICA ORI. As a result of the screening assessment, this study was exempt from an ethics review by the Research Ethics Committee of ORI. In undertaking the survey to households, surveyors obtained a consent to participate in the survey from every survey participant after explaining the purpose of the survey and the fact that all information provided in the survey would remain anonymous.
: IS is an employee of JICA, an organisation that provided support to the FFS programme in Kenya, which is the subject of the case study described in this article. All other authors currently have or previously had fixed-term contracts with JICA.
