: University of Manchester institutional ethical approval to conduct the study was granted on 02/05/2018 (Ref: NHS001323) subsequent to receiving Health Research Authority (UK National Health Service) approval on 21/03/2018. The study was reviewed by South Yorkshire NHS Research Ethics Committee and favourable opinion was received on 05/03/2018 (Ref: 18/YH/0035). Processes to ensure informed consent were the following. Study information packs were distributed to all eligible staff and patients. Interested staff returned ‘consent-to-contact’ forms to researchers and patients returned these forms to ward staff for collection by researchers. No participants were approached by researchers until consent-to-contact forms had been received. Patient capacity to participate was assessed by registered ward nurses. Participants provided written informed consent prior to participating in the study.
