Ethics approval and consent to participate: All experimental procedures on rats were undertaken following the Association for Research for Vision and Ophthalmology Statement for the Use of Animals in Ophthalmic and Research. Individual study protocols were approved by Stockholm’s Committee for Ethical Animal Research (10389–2018 and 3909–2023). Access to histopathology archive samples was fully covered through biobank #366 (St. Erik Eye Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden).
