: This study was carried out in accordance with The Declaration of Helsinki [CitationRef removed]. Ethical approval was granted by the Swedish Ethical Review Authority with permit reference 2020-00396. The permit included deferred consent (< 12 h) and inclusion of patients not able to give consent themselves due to their acute critical condition. In these cases, physically present relatives were asked for permission and patients were included if relatives did not oppose research. The study was preregistered at ClinicalTrials.gov with identifier NCT04409470 and is reported according to the STROBE guidelines for observational trials.
