: The WFSM is accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care and is compliant with the Animal Welfare Act. Animals were fed a standard commercial diet and had ad libitum access to water. The monkeys were observed on a daily basis for any abnormal clinical presentations by care staff and were tested for retroviral infections and tuberculosis prior to use. All experimental procedures outlined in this manuscript were approved by the Wake Forest Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC protocol: #A16â008). In order to minimize stress, experimental procedures were performed using anesthesia via intramuscular injections of ketamine (10â15âmg/kg). Analgesia, when necessary, was prescribed at the discretion of the laboratory animal veterinarian. The euthanasia protocol used was consistent with the Guidelines for Euthanasia of Animals from the American Veterinary Medical Association.
