: Ethical approval was provided by the Scotland A Research Ethics Committee, reference number 23/SS/0075, on the 28th of August 2023. Written informed consent will be obtained from all patients recruited for the study. Consent will be sought directly from the patient where possible or from their Nearest Relative/Guardian or Welfare Attorney (or nearest ward if no suitable Nearest Relative/Guardian or Welfare Attorney is available) in accordance with the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000 for adults who lack capacity. Trial participants will be informed once they have recovered capacity after extubation that they are free to withdraw from the study at any time, without having to give a reason, and without their current or future care being affected. Written consent will be obtained.
