Ethics approval and consent to participate: The study received ethical approval from the Debark University Ethical Review Board (ERB). Public referral hospitals in the North Gondar Zone received a letter regarding cooperation with protocol number DKU/RPD/106/2017, dated April 10, 2025 (Gregorian calendar; originally March 2, 2017 Ethiopian calendar). The Ethical Review Committee (ERC) did not require informed consent because the study was retrospective in nature. By removing patient names and other identifying information from the data extraction forms and using the data just for this study, confidentiality was maintained throughout. The Helsinki Declaration’s principles were followed in the conduct of the study. The study’s retrospective chart review approach precluded the application of informed consent. As a result, the Ethical Review Committee (ERC) of the hospitals in Debark, Janamora, and Dabat waived the consent requirement, allowed the review of the medical records of individuals with diabetes mellitus.
