: The host university’s research governance team and the host NHS provider’s quality improvement and assurance team classified this study as a National Evaluation Audit (project number 4945). This meant it was exempt from ethical approval. However, we followed core ethical principles: obtaining written, informed consent from potential research participants that their (anonymised) responses would be used for research purposes, their participation was voluntary, and participants had the right to withdraw at any time.
: Written, informed consent was obtained from participants to permit publication of interview data.
: During the period of study, KGW was the Simulation Lead for Scottish Core Surgical Training and a member of the Scottish Improving Surgical Training Working Group. He was part-time salaried by NHS Education for Scotland to implement the National Core Surgical Simulation Strategy alongside his clinical duties.
