: Video conferencing tools enable remote communication and are widely used. The design of these tools has a profound impact on the quality of user experience. Vision science can inform better design choices. Results of the current study show that background clutter has a detrimental effect on performance in common video conferencing-related tasks, such as finding the current speaker or a reaction symbol. Our findings suggest that the choice of virtual backgrounds has a significant impact on user experience.
