: All pig hearts used in this study were retrieved from pigs slaughtered for human consumption. The protocols at the slaughterhouse and during the experiment were in agreement with EC regulations 1069/2009 and 142/2011 regarding the use of slaughterhouse byproducts for research and were approved by the associated legal authorities of animal welfare.
