: This study was performed using spleen and skin samples previously collected and stored in the histological records of the Gonçalo Moniz Institute in the period between 1997 to 2001. No new animal manipulations were performed. All the procedures involving animals were conducted in accordance with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation guidelines for animal experimentation and with the manual for the surveillance and control of visceral leishmaniasis (ExternalRef removed) (Baleeiro et al.
