: Ethical approval for using animals: all fish included in this study were collected according to the Council Regulation (EC) No 1967/2006 of 21 December 2006 concerning management measures for the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources in the Mediterranean Sea, amending Regulation (EEC) No 2847/93 and repealing Regulation (EC) No 1626/94. The fish included in the large-scale dataset were caught by professional fishermen and collected already dead by us; those included in the small-scale dataset were collected by us together with professional fishermen and euthanized out of the water by cervical dislocation according to the European directive 2010/63/UE.
