: The present study used only residual porcine organ material that had been made available for scientific use under the institutional and local regulatory framework governing the use of animal remains in research. No live animals were used in the present study, and no animal was bred, housed, subjected to experimental procedures, or euthanized specifically for the purposes of this work. The material would otherwise have been discarded. The use of the animal remains complied with applicable ethical and legal requirements, including the provisions of Regulation (EC) 1069/2009 and the Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances (TRGS). Apart from the animal species and organ type, no further animal-related information was included in this study. Data collection and all experiments were conducted in accordance with the approval of Ethics Commission II of Heidelberg University (vote S-206/2005). The scientific use of the residual material was carried out in close coordination with the local authorities and was covered by the veterinary office of the City of Heidelberg (registration number DE 08 221 1001 21).
