: All institutional and/or national guidelines and regulations regarding the collection of specimens were followed. Specimens of <i>Hypseleotris</i> collected from the Kimberley region had animal ethics approval from the Research Ethics and Integrity office at the University of Melbourne, ID 1212470.1. The collections were made under Government of Western Australia, Department of Fisheries permit, Ref. 220/12, and when the collections were in National Parks they were made under Department of Parks and Wildlife Permit SF008685 (2012–2013) and SF009877 (2014–2015). Additional samples of <i>Hypseleotris</i> and <i>Philypnodon</i> used in this study were collected and processed under University of Canberra animal ethics approvals CEAE 13-06, CEAE15-06 and 20180442. Samples of outgroup taxa were obtained from the fish tissue collection of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
