: The experiments were approved by the Institute Pasteur review board (2013–0109 protocol 99–174), and the animal work was carried out in accordance with European Union Directive 2010/63/EU (and its revision 86/609/EEC). Meningococcal isolates used in this study and their accompanying genetic data were acquired from the National Reference Laboratory for <i>Neisseria meningitidis</i> in Sweden. The collection of clinical data from patients infected with the isolates in this study was approved by the regional ethical review board in Uppsala, Sweden (reference numbers 2018/139 and 2014/150).
