The EMMA Axenic Service has an approval for each research project and for the animal euthanization method (cervical dislocation without anesthesia) by the Ethics Committee of Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, the Animal Welfare Body, and the National Competent Authority (DGAV), and follows the recommendations of the Federation of Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA). The Animal Facility is licensed by Direcção Geral de Veterinária (N° of identification and registration: PT 05 052 OICB).
