Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The BEACH program and all sub-studies were approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of Sydney (Reference number 2012/130). Verbal consent was obtained from all participating GPs at time of recruitment, confirmed by their agreement to be sent a research kit. No GPs were sent research kits unless they had consented to participate and a data collection starting date agreed. The HREC approved this process as evidence of the GPs’ consent to participate. The research kits contained a detailed patient information sheet. At recruitment, patients were shown the sheet which explained the study, that no identifying information would be recorded, that they had the right to refuse to participate, and that their refusal would not influence the care they received at their GP visit. All materials were approved by the HREC. The HREC directed that the GP make note of receiving verbal consent from each participating patient in the patient’s record, as written consent from the patient would have identified them to the research team.
