A passive consent process was used for patients in accordance with approved CPCSSN ethics. All CPCSSN networks have received REB approval from their host institutions as well as the Health Canada REB for collecting this information. Patients were informed at each participating practice that their physician is participating in CPCSSN through patient information posters and letters of information, which explained that they have the right to opt out by informing their physician, medical office staff, or the researchers. No data that can identify patients or their healthcare providers is part of the CPCSSN databases.
