The Mayo Clinic Institutional Review Board granted a waiver of informed consent as the study involved no more than minimal risk to study subjects, there was no planned intervention or direct contact/communication with study participants, as such the waiver did not adversely affect the rights and welfare of the subjects, and the study only included patients who provided authorization for their medical records to be used for research purposes.
