: For many people ACP is intricately connected to sensitive topics like death and dying. Experienced interviewers conducted the data collection in confidential surroundings or by telephone. Patient participants received written and oral information on the study, were given the possibility to ask questions and were informed about their right to withdraw their written consent at any timepoint of the study without negative consequences. All other participants received written information and were informed verbally directly before data collection, given the possibility to ask questions, and informed about their right to withdraw their oral consent at any timepoint of the study.The ethical approval for the process evaluation was obtained together with the parent study from the ethics committees of the participating universities (Oldenburg: Ref.-No. 2019–024, Halle (Saale): Ref.-No. 2019–045, Lübeck: Ref.-No. 19–080). All methods were performed based on this approval and in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations.
