: This study and the use of CPRD Aurum data, was given ethical approval by The University of Liverpool Research Ethics Committee (Reference: 7922). All use of data and methods of analysis were conducted in accordance with the appropriate guidelines and regulations. Individual, patient-level consent to participate is not required in the use of anonymised, secondary datasets of this nature. GPs register with CPRD and agree to provide entirely anonymised, non-patient identifiable data from their practice to help support and inform public health research. Consent to participate is taken from GPs once they register with CPRD, with patients given the option to opt-out of their data being part of that sent to CPRD. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) endorse GPs registering with CPRD. Data is anonymised at source, and CPRD and researchers therefore receive no patient-identifiable data. Researchers go through a rigorous process in applying to access CPRD data, and are bound to adhere to strict regulations in the use of CPRD data, in order to maintain confidentiality and to only use data for its explicit research intentions. Therefore, informed consent is deemed unnecessary by CPRD and acknowledged with the need for informed consent waived by the University of Liverpool ethics committee.
