Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Written informed consent was obtained from all parents and guardians of the children that were enrolled in this study. Ethical approval for the study, to perform molecular analyses on the samples was obtained from Botswana’s institutional review board, the Health Research and Development Council (HRDC). Furthermore, permission to collect data, samples from patients and subsequent analysis was sought from HRDC, McMaster University and University of Pennsylvania as reported in the previous study [CitationRef removed]. This study was conducted according to the principles expressed in the Declaration of Helsinki.
