: This study was part of a larger study for which ethical approval was obtained from the ethics committee of the university hospital in Antwerp, Belgium (Belgian registration nr. All subjects provided verbal consent for screening which was carried out by the national leprosy control program as part of their active case finding strategy. Leprosy patients identified were enrolled in the main study (reported separately) after providing written informed consent. In case of illiterate individuals, a thumb print and a signature of an independent witness were sought. For minors below the age of 18 years, a parent or guardian provided informed consent.
