: The study protocol was submitted for review and approval by institutional ethics review boards of Kenya Medical Research Institute (Scientific Ethics Review Unit protocol no. #3049) and United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC protocol no. #6968). CDC’s human subjects research office relied on KEMRI for IRB oversight. Written informed consent for enrolment into the study was obtained from parents or guardians of children admitted with diarrhea symptoms.
