Ethics approval and consent to participate
: This project was a clinical service improvement and the requirement for research ethics committee (REC) approval was therefore waived in line with NHS Health Research Authority guidance (ExternalRef removed). This decision to waive REC approval had oversight of two institutional review bodies: The office of the Integrated Care Medical Director and Research and Development, Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Trust, and the Clinical Academic Group for Medicine and Therapies, King’s Health Partners. In line with procedures relating to a clinical service improvement, all capacitous participants, and relatives in case of non-capacitous participants, were verbally appraised of the project and given the opportunity to not take part. Written appraisal was not practical due to visiting restrictions. This approach was approved by the institutional review bodies.
