: This was an ad-hoc and rapid investigation initiated and conducted as a part of routine outbreak investigation and public health response authorized by the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) of the Government of Nepal. Once the outbreak was confirmed, ward officials, local health workers, community leaders and individual household heads were informed about the need to obtain information about the risks of illness in the local households and course of treatment that patients underwent. Verbal informed consent was obtained from cases and controls in adult participants, and from legal guardians in participants less than 18 years of age, for the interview, and specimen collection. The decision to publish the findings was made after the investigations were complete given the importance of disseminating the findings.
