: Approval for the study was obtained from the University of KwaZulu-Natal Biomedical Research Ethics Committee (BE 516/17), the study hospital, and the Health Research Committee of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health. As the patients were critically ill and unable to provide informed consent and as the study was a minimal risk study, informed consent was waived by the above committees.
