: Ethical approval for this study was obtained from the Committee on Human Research, Publications and Ethics of the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana [CHRPE/AP/229/12]. All participants provided written informed consent. For participants < 18 years old, consent was obtained from a parent or a legal guardian. The study was conducted in accordance with the ethical principles on research involving human subjects as set out in the Declaration of Helsinki. Sampling and laboratory confirmation for both BU and HIV infection followed the approved national procedures. All confirmed cases were referred for appropriate treatment of BU and HIV.
