The Public Health Departments in Germany are instructed by German national law to intervene in ongoing outbreaks with dangerous infectious diseases through testing, collecting and analyzing medical data, monitoring the progression of outbreaks, reinforcing quarantine, forbidding infected people from working, setting up hygiene standards and conducting regular hygiene inspections (in accordance with §§ 6–9, 16, 25, 29, 30, 31 and 36 German National Infection Control Act—IfSG). All data was collected, anonymized and processed in accordance with the IfSG, therefore no ethical approval is required.
