Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Not applicable. This study was given Trust approval in September 2015. This is before HRA approval was required (which came into operation) in April 2016. Sponsor approval was given in October 2015 even though the trust and sponsor were the same.At the time, the process of obtaining NHS permissions, which was referred to as Research & Development (R&D) approval, relied upon the research department, within the individual trusts, undertaking ‘site specific assessments’. These checks included inter alia ensuring the relevant approvals were in place (such as a favourable ethical opinion if applicable). After obtaining site approval from the R&D offices the study would require sponsor approval (green light). This study was classified as ‘A study limited to working with data (specific project only)’ (IRAS 191394). As the research data was anonymised it did not require Ethics approval.
