: Ethical clearance for the study was obtained from the research and ethics committee of the Federal University, Birnin kebbi. The ethics committee approved the use of verbal consent obtained from respondents before the commencement of the survey. The need to obtain parental consent for respondents under age of 16 was further waived by the committee. In each of the community sampled, approval was first sought from the district and village heads (<i>mai-anguwar)</i> before the field work. During the field work, verbal consent was obtained from each respondent before administering the questionnaires.
