: The study protocol was approved by the institutional review boards of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Institutional Review Board (Baltimore, Maryland), International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh Ethical Review Committee (iccdr,b) (Dhaka, Bangladesh), and Partners Human Research Committee (Boston, MA).Participants were enrolled after providing verbal informed consent for the main RCT. Verbal consent was obtained because the majority of the prospective study population was illiterate at the initiation of the study (2012). Documentation of verbal informed consent was formally approved by all participating institutional review boards.The study was explained to the study participants, questions answered, and the name of the study participant, date of consent, and name/signature of the study staff obtaining verbal consent were collected on a paper consent document. A paper copy of the consent form was provided to the study participant.
