Ethics approval and consent to participate
: The DHS receive government permission and follow ethical practices including informed consent and assurance of confidentiality. Before interviews started, respondents were informed about the purpose and duration of the interviews. They were given the name of the agency that was conducting the survey and informed that their participation was voluntary, and that they could stop the interview at any time. Respondents were told that all information provided would be kept confidential and de-identified to protect their anonymity. They were given an opportunity to ask the survey enumerator any questions. The enumerator asked them whether they consented to participate. Such verbal consent, if obtained, was noted on the questionnaire with a signature of the enumerator and the date before the start of the interview. Egypt’s Institutional Review Board ensured that the survey complied with national laws and norms. The Research Ethics Committee of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine approved our secondary-data analysis.
