Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical clearance was obtained from the Ghana Health Service Ethics Review Committee before commencement of the study (ID: GHS-ERC:045/12/17), and the study conducted in accordance with the declaration of Helsinki. Permission was also sought from the Central Regional Health Directorate as well as the Cape Coast Metropolitan Health Directorate for the study to be conducted in their facilities. Written informed consent was obtained from each study participant and assured of confidentiality and privacy before recruitment into the study. Participants aged 15–17 years were followed to their homes after ANC and informed consent obtained from their mothers. They themselves provided assent to be part of the study.
