Ethics approval and consent to participate
: This study attained ethics approval for human participation and consent to participate from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Institutional Review Board and ethics approval for recruitment and consent of human participants at Peruvian government clinics from the regional government, Red de Salud Arequipa-Caylloma. In the planning phase, Peruvian partners to the study expressed that there is a level of distrust among women in signing a document and that in order for a successful study we needed verbal consent for participation alone to ensure complete anonymity for these women. The need for verbal consent to participate instead of signed or written consent was included in both proposals. The UCSF Institutional Review Board and Red de Salud Arequipa-Caylloma both approved verbal consent only given our population of interest. All participants gave verbal consent after reviewing a personal copy of the complete study plan and description. This manuscript contains de-identified participant demographics and childbirth history, as applicable.
