: Ethical clearance was obtained from the Higher Degree Ethics and Research Committee of Makerere University School of Statistics and Planning, and the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) of Malawi Protocol Number P.12/15/67. Permission to conduct the study was obtained from Mangochi District Health Office. A written informed consent was obtained from the village head of each selected village of study, and from each respondent. Respondents were informed that all the information obtained from them would be kept confidential. Furthermore, the participants were informed of their right to withdrawal from the study anytime they felt like with no consequences attached. The questionnaire was coded instead of using names as identification and hence confidentiality was assured throughout the study.
