Ethics approval and consent to participate
: Ethical approval was granted by the Kenyatta National Hospital/University of Nairobi Ethical and Research Committee under approved study number P235/03/2016 before conducting the study. Informed consent was granted by the primary caretaker for each child recruited.The study was conducted among children aged 3 to 24 months presenting with acute diarrhoea, which was defined as passage of three or more loose stools per day lasting less than 14 days. Sequential sampling of patients who met the inclusion criteria was done in the paediatric wards and the paediatric emergency unit, then informed written consent was obtained from the caretaker.
