: Consent (from patients) is not required for public health surveillance purposes. We are able to collect the information without consent on behalf of PHAC under the Department of Health Act and the Public Health of Agency Act. Physicians (paediatricians and paediatric subspecialists) provide their consent when participating in the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP).Upon graduating from the Royal Colleague, paediatricians and paediatric subspecialists receive a letter from the CPSP explaining that they have been enrolled in the CPSP for the purposes of national public health surveillance. Paediatricians have the opportunity to notify the program if they do not wish to participate (do not consent). Physicians who participate in the program have implied their informed consent. All methods were carried out in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations including Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS2, 2014).The legal authority for this activity is derived from the s.4 of the Department of Health Act and section 3 of the Public Health Agency of Canada Act. The Department of Health Act S.C. 1996, c.8 (the “Act”) confers federal powers to the Minister of Health related to the promotion and preservation of the health of the people of Canada. As part of the Health Portfolio, PHAC supports the Minister of Health in this role. The Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program is a joint program of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and the Canadian Paediatric Society that contributes to the improvement of the health of children and youth in Canada through a national surveillance of childhood disorders. All materials are closely reviewed and approved by the CPSP Scientific Steering Committee.
