: Ethical clearance was obtained from the institutional review board of University of Gondar on behalf of the ethical review committee of the School of Nursing with (Ref.no SN/231/2014). Ethics approval was approved by the respective institutions confirming that all study protocols were approved by IRB of the School of Nursing, University of Gondar. The IRB of School of Nursing, has waved informed consent of the medical records of the neonates. Since the study was conducted by using appropriate information from patient’s medical charts, it could not inflict any harm on the patients. So informed consent was impractical for this study. This is in line with the Helsinki Declaration which states that in “medical research using identifiable human material or data, physicians must normally seek consent for the collection, analysis, storage and/or reuse. There would be impossible to obtain for such research or would pose a threat to the validity of the research. In such situations, the research may be done only after consideration and approval of the research ethics committee”. A letter of cooperation was written to the respective comprehensive Specialized Hospitals of Northwest Ethiopia, and permission was obtained from Clinical directors and relevant departments. At the time of data collection personal identifiers (name, medical registration number) were excluded. The confidentiality of the data was strictly maintained throughout the study process.
